From those early beginnings of flight in 1903 to the post-war era of the Schneider Trophy races in which the unlikely floatplanes beat all-comers, on to 1947 when the sound barrier was finally broken and on even further to the American fixed-wing space shuttle which achieved a speed of 25 times faster than sound. These are just some of the many milestones in the history of speed in the air. Their stories and those of many more aircraft - each of which made a significant contribution to that goal of yet faster flying speeds, are all described in this book.

38 of the all-time great aircraft are here. The author's descriptions carefully reveal the story of each aircraft, it's specifications, conception, setbacks and achievements in terms of speed, height and distance. This quest was, of course, a dangerous one which threw up it's fair share of heroes and designers of the highest calibre.

Well written, I actually found myself not wanting to come to the end of this one.
